A useful summer scalp routine should respond to what the scalp has actually encountered. A day in an air-conditioned office does not require the same care as a run in hot weather, an afternoon at the beach or repeated swimming on holiday.
The aim is not to create a complicated seasonal regime. It is to remove sweat, sebum, sunscreen, chlorine, salt and styling residue when present, while protecting exposed scalp skin and maintaining the hair lengths.

The perfect everyday summer scalp routine
Morning
Check whether the scalp or parting will be exposed. For prolonged outdoor activity, use a hat, shade and suitable sun protection on visible skin. Keep hairstyles comfortable and avoid sustained tension around the hairline.
During the day
Minimise repeated touching of the roots. If dry shampoo is needed, use the smallest effective amount and regard it as a temporary styling aid rather than cleansing.
At the end of the day
Wash where the scalp feels oily, sweaty or coated. Where exposure has been light, keep to your normal schedule. There is no advantage in washing purely because the calendar says it is summer.
After exercise
Allow the scalp to cool and remove damp headwear. Light perspiration may only require drying or a fresh-water rinse. Heavy sweating is more likely to leave salt, sebum and product residue and may justify shampooing.
Apply shampoo to the scalp and massage with the fingertips. Rinse around the crown, behind the ears and at the nape. Condition the lengths as needed.
After swimming
- Rinse promptly with fresh water.
- Cleanse the scalp where chlorine, salt, sunscreen or heavy perspiration remains.
- Apply conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends.
- Detangle with a wide-tooth comb, beginning at the ends.
- Allow hair to dry before tying it tightly.
A simple holiday routine
Holiday haircare can become difficult when too many new products are introduced at once. For sensitive scalps, keep the core routine familiar and add only the protection required for sun and swimming.

What does a weekly scalp reset involve?
A scalp reset does not require detoxifying the scalp or removing every trace of natural oil. After a period of heavier exposure, review whether dry shampoo, sunscreen or swimming residue has accumulated; whether shampoo is reaching the whole scalp; whether you rinse for long enough; and whether conditioner is being applied too close to fine roots.
Where buildup is present, two gentle shampoo applications can be more effective than one aggressive application. The first loosens residue; the second distributes more evenly.
The Olsson Scandinavia summer routine
Cleanse: Choose Sensitive Shampoo for normal-to-dry hair or Sensitive Volume Shampoo where fine roots need lift.
Condition: Apply Sensitive Conditioner mainly through the mid-lengths and ends.
Support dry lengths: Use the Sensitive Hair Mask periodically after repeated swimming, sun and wind exposure.
Test before changing: The patch test allows sensitive customers to assess shampoo and conditioner before purchasing the full routine.
Common summer scalp-care mistakes
- Using dry shampoo indefinitely: It absorbs some oil but does not remove sweat, sunscreen or existing residue.
- Scrubbing harder because roots feel greasy: Fingernails and aggressive brushes can damage skin. Distribution and rinsing matter more than force.
- Putting heavy conditioner at the roots: This may reduce volume and make fine hair look greasy sooner.
- Ignoring scalp sun protection: A visible parting or thinning crown is exposed skin and should be protected.
- Changing every product on holiday: Introducing several unfamiliar formulations makes it difficult to identify a cause if sensitivity develops.
A practical summer scalp routine is responsive rather than rigid...
Cleanse after meaningful exposure, rinse after swimming, condition the lengths, reduce unnecessary layering and protect visible scalp skin from UV. A small number of familiar, well-tolerated products is usually more useful than an elaborate seasonal overhaul.
