Sensitive Scalp Care Recommended by Allergy Experts, trusted by Pharmacy Teams, loved by Sensitive Scalps.
Olsson Scandinavia was scalp-first before ‘skinification’ had a name: completely fragrance-free haircare, shaped by Copenhagen salon heritage and independently scrutinised for more than a decade without accepting that sensitive haircare should leave hair feeling flat, heavy or coated.
Scalp first before skinification had a name
The skinification of haircare is reshaping the beauty conversation, but Olsson Scandinavia started in a simpler place: the scalp is skin, so why should everyday haircare ignore it?
The creators wanted to take a different path from conventional salon haircare. The brief was to clean hair properly while taking a mild, less-is-more Scandinavian approach to the scalp. That meant a purposeful formula and fragrance-free was essential from the beginning, not removed later to follow a trend.
The result is a scalp-first proposition with a salon-performance mindset. Because sensitive shouldn’t mean compromise.
Born in Copenhagen salons
Olsson Scandinavia's formula grew from the professional expertise behind STUHR®, the Copenhagen hairdressing name established by visionary stylist Elmer Stuhr in 1957.
What began as a single Copenhagen salon grew into Denmark’s largest salon chain. Elmer built his reputation through competition, international study and a pioneering approach to education and technique including helping move Danish hairdressing from blade cutting towards scissors. STUHR® Interschool raised professional standards, while the launch of salon products in the 1970s extended that expertise beyond the chair.
STUHR® Mild carries the same formula as Olsson Scandinavia. Henrik Olsson, who played a key role in the development of STUHR salon products, became owner and CEO of STUHR Group in 2021 and took ownership of the STUHR salon business in 2022. The lineage matters: this is sensitive haircare with professional roots, not a clinical-looking compromise created in isolation from the salon world.
Fragrance free was the heart of the brief
Olsson Scandinavia is completely fragrance free. Across the range there is no added perfume, no essential oils and no masking fragrance. The formulas also exclude limonene and linalool.
That distinction matters. ‘Unscented’ can simply mean a fragrance has been used to disguise another smell. Olsson Scandinavia’s position is clearer: fragrance has no job to do here, so it is left out.
For people who actively avoid fragrance, whether through allergy, sensitivity, personal preference or because sensitivity has increased with age clarity is part of the product. The absence of scent is not a missing luxury; it is the point.
Less without losing the salon clean
One of the most persistent assumptions about sensitive haircare is that it will leave hair flat, dank, heavy or coated. Olsson was developed to challenge that trade-off.
The Sensitive Shampoo uses SLES intentionally as part of a blended cleansing system alongside Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate and Zinc Coceth Sulfate. SLES is not SLS. More importantly, the performance of a cleanser depends on the complete formulation not one ingredient viewed in isolation. Olsson Scandinavia’s brief was to balance effective cleansing with a mild, scalp-first approach.
Customer feedback repeatedly returns to the same surprise: the hair feels properly clean. For many people, finding a product that fits their fragrance-free requirements is the first win; discovering that it also behaves like good salon haircare is the second.
The community showed us who needed it
Olsson Scandinavia was not created to target eczema or Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), and it is not a treatment for either condition. It was created as mild, fragrance-free salon haircare for people who care about their scalp.
The brand always expected to find a place within the allergy community because independent accreditation was deliberately sought. What was less expected was the way people going through TSW began to adopt and advocate for the shampoo and conditioner themselves.
From customer feedback and community-created content, the brand has heard stories from people for whom washing their hair had stopped being a simple task including people who previously washed over a bath or wore gloves to avoid contact in the shower. These are individual experiences, not treatment claims, but they reveal the everyday significance of a well-tolerated routine.
Olsson Scandinavia does not advocate using cosmetic haircare on broken skin. Individual sensitivities vary, and anyone with a diagnosed condition should follow advice from their healthcare professional.
Chosen through lived experience
Skin Solace is a specialist UK clinic founded by Louise and Jing following their own independent experiences of living with eczema and enduring TSW. After meeting while receiving regenerative treatment in Singapore, they established Skin Solace in 2021 to make support more accessible to other skin sufferers.
Both founders used Olsson Scandinavia shampoo and conditioner during their own journeys. The clinic subsequently selected and sold the duo as part of a daily haircare routine for its customers. That decision is meaningful to the brand because it came from lived experience, not a paid campaign.

Independent scrutiny, not vague reassurance
The Sensitive Shampoo and Sensitive Conditioner have carried approval from Allergy UK and Asthma Allergy Nordic for more than ten years.
For Olsson Scandinavia, third-party assessment provides a more credible reference point than simply describing a formula as ‘gentle’. It allows independent organisations to scrutinise the products against their criteria and gives customers something tangible to investigate for themselves.
The brand is also exploring SkinSAFE assessment for the United States. This is work in progress and should not be described as approval unless and until it has been formally granted.
Approval does not guarantee that no individual will react. Full ingredient lists should always be checked against personal sensitivities.
A brand held, then grown, through change
In 2020, during the disruption of Covid, Olsson Scandinavia’s UK distributor went into liquidation. The brand’s UK marketing company, InsideOut Ideas, was asked to take care of the brand. What began as stewardship became a long-term commitment.
Belief in the products and the freedom to shape the UK business around the customer allowed the team to give the brand the care it deserved. Today, the UK operation leads customer acquisition, ecommerce, retention, positioning and retail strategy while supporting the wider European growth plan.
The ambition is commercially clear: take a specialist proposition with mass-market relevance into wider UK retail, and build Olsson Scandinavia into the recognised international destination for fragrance-free haircare.
Ready for the next stage
Olsson Scandinavia is currently available through its own ecommerce site, Amazon, TikTok Shop, Rackhams and selected specialist partners. The brand is actively seeking wider UK retail distribution.
Thirty-nine per cent of customers identifiable through Olsson’s directly tracked channels are repeat customers. This figure excludes marketplaces where customer-level data cannot be tracked accurately. For a brand serving a specific need, repeat purchase is one of the clearest commercial signals that the proposition is working.
