Living with psoriasis during the colder months
Skin conditions such as psoriasis can be exhausting and crippling. Especially as flare ups become more prominent over the colder months.
Winter psoriasis usually starts on the elbows and scalp, in circular areas of red and darker skin. They tend to be covered with a white hard layer of skin sometimes looking scaly and can be quite dense and coarse. They can crack and bleed and leave itchy sore like areas over the skin.
If you’re suffering from psoriasis, you’re not alone.
Approximately, two percent of the population suffers from the condition. The cause of psoriasis is unknown, whilst it commonly appears between the ages of ten and thirty and the condition is usually (not always) triggered by stress, skin damage, illness and bacterial infections.
Why does my scalp psoriasis get worse during winter?
Whilst stress and low immune systems are a common cause of flare ups, a change in weather can also bring discomfort. Low levels of exposure to the sunlight’s ultraviolet rays are known to worsen the symptoms of psoriasis. In winter, the shorter days mean less ultraviolet light for our scalps – combined with our need for the comfort of a cosy hat, sheltering our scalps further from the sunlight.
Consider the environment we keep indoors, the colder damp day give way to us popping on the central heating during autumn and winter months - before you know it your summer routine is no longer working its magic.

Frequently asked questions
Asthma, allergies & scalp sensitivities
I suffer from asthma. How can I be sure your products will be safe for me to use?
Our haircare experts have designed all Olsson products specifically with asthma and allergy sufferers in mind, avoiding key allergens such as colour, perfume and other ingredients thought to trigger allergic reactions. It has been recommended by the Asthma Allergy Nordic and Allergy UK, so you can be sure it’s safe to use if you have asthma.
I find my scalp gets itchy and irritated usually often after shampooing, so will Olsson products help?
Olsson products have been designed to be extra gentle on hair and scalp as they have been formulated without any of the key and known irritants such as colour, fragrance and parabens. We’ve added Aloe Vera which is known to have a soothing effect on irritated scalps so you should feel a difference to your scalp, even after one shampoo.
Will Olsson help dandruff?
The skin on our body and scalp is constantly shedding and being replaced, and when we shower or take a bath, dead skin is washed away. On the scalp, it’s removed during shampooing and rinsing - if you have a sensitive scalp it can become irritated by perfumes which can cause dryness leading to dandruff. Olsson haircare will deeply cleanse your scalp with minimal risk of irritation.
Do you have a patch test available?
Yes. You can get your hands on 3ml of Shampoo (Normal/Dry) and 3ml of Conditioner for the purpose of a patch test for your personal sensitivities. You can find this here.

Is sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) safe?
Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) is created through a different process to that of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). It uses a process called ethoxylation where ethylene oxide is added to change the makeup of the compound. This process means SLES is much more gentle and ideal for use on both hair and skin. It doesn’t strip the epidermis of any excess moisture, leaving it feeling soft, smooth and nourished.
Is sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) an allergen?
Contact allergy to sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) has been reported, but there is no scientific evidence supporting that SLES should be a carcinogen. The Olsson Haircare range uses SLES in quantities within the safe ranges established by scientific and regulatory agencies. Additionally, our shampoo and conditioner are recommended by Allergy UK and Asthma Allergy Nordic.
Which formulations are gluten free?
All of them! The Olsson Scandinavia Shampoo Normal/Dry and Volume, Conditioner, Leave-in Conditioner Spray, Hair Spray, Hair Mousse and Hard Mud Styling Wax are all gluten-free.
