5 Easy ways to protect a sensitive scalp in hot weather

Summers can be very taxing for your scalp, especially if you happen to have a sensitive one. From dryness and itchiness to nagging discomfort and visible dandruff – it’s crucial that you take the right steps to keep that beautiful, sensitive scalp of yours healthy throughout the summer season.

Regularly using a sensitive haircare product, protecting your head from the sun with a hat and massaging are just a few steps you can take to keep your scalp from getting hot, dry and irritable during the summer. However, here are 5 super easy ways to help protect and keep your scalp healthy in the summer heat:

1. Protect your scalp

It goes without saying that you need to wear a hat or scarf to protect your scalp in the hot summer season, but you’d be surprised how many people take this advice lightly.

Your scalp is, in fact, an extension of your lovely skin and as such needs protection, just like your adorable face. By wearing a hat or scarf, you ensure that your scalp does not get greasy, which is when the trouble begins.

2. Avoid heat styling products

As tempting as it seems, you’d want to steer clear of all heat styling products including blow dryers – having heat trapped into your scalp could exacerbate your sensitive scalp problems. It can also leave your hair dry and brittle, and cause damage down the road such as hair breakage, which is quite common in the summer season.

3. Cold compress

You may not find this to be the most practical fix on this list if you have long, thick and lush hair – but you’re actually doing your sensitive scalp a huge favour by applying a cold compress, as it will soothe the scapular skin, giving you much-needed relief from irritation.

And it’s simple too: just freeze the cold compress and apply it to one section of your hair at a time. Let it rest there for at least a few seconds and repeat the cycle no more than 3 to 4 times.

4. Scalp cooling pack

A scalp cooling pack made at home is something you should definitely try if your sensitive scalp gets irritated in the summer as it not only aids in soothing your scalp but also wards off oil, sweat, dandruff and that mildly irritating smell.

Aloe vera gel and peppermint oil work as an excellent cooling agent and you can make this right at home by mixing 6 to 7 tablespoons aloe vera gel with 2 to 3 peppermint oil drops. Apply this directly to your scalp and let it sit for 45 minutes. Follow up with a mild shampoo and sensitive haircare conditioner.

5. Wash regularly

You absolutely have to wash your hair 2-3 times a week during summer. This lets your scalp cool down properly and washes off all the sweat and bacteria that accumulates due to the heat and sweating.

Using a mild sensitive haircare shampoo ensures that you get the much-needed nourishment throughout the summer season.
